The quiet town of Dillon Beach is located just 4 miles west of Hwy 1 at the mouth of Tomales Bay.
Dillon Beach was first inhabited by the Coast Miwok Indians who traded their fish to inland tribes. In the early 1800s the area consisted mostly of Russian fur trappers who left after the otter population diminished mid century. The actual founder, in 1859, was an Irishman named George Dillon who built a small hotel and began selling beachfront properties. Since then the town has become a popular spot for vacationers seeking a quiet place to relax.
The area is comprised of a long, white sand beach, beautiful coastal bluffs, sand dunes, rich esteros, and tidal estuaries. Dillon Beach boasts an abundance of wildlife from otters, whales, and seals to jack rabbits, deer, and California Quail.
A wide variety of activities include Grey Whale watching, surfing, kite flying and boarding, hiking, beachcombing and fishing. Salmon, halibut, crab, giant clams, and perch are popular catches for the area.
