At the gateway to the Point Reyes National Seashore, the town is located on Hwy 1, sometimes called Shoreline Highway. It is in between Tomales Bay and Drakes Bay and is about 30 minutes northwest of San Francisco.
Sir Francis Drake was said to have been the first European explorer to land here, where 120 Coast Miwok tribes once lived. However, it's name is said to have come from a Spanish explorer who landed there some 23 years later and named it 'punto de los Reyes' or "Kings Point". Point Reyes was a major stop on the railroad giving it the further distinction of Point Reyes Station. Due to the rocky coast and thick fog, the Point Reyes Light House was installed to help lower the incidence of shipwrecks.
Point Reyes Station is a bustling little town with a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere. Tourists come through often and stop at the many small restaurants and shops. There are 2 cheese companies in town, The Cowgirl Creamery and The Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese which makes the famous Original Blue Cheese.
The area is visited by many travelers looking to stay at one of the many cottages and inns and also nature lovers who seek to enjoy the hiking trails, Point Reyes National Seashore, Tule Elk viewing, kayaking, and natural beauty of the area and its wildlife
