The quaint town of Tomales is located in West Marin County on Hwy 1. It is 17 miles west of Petaluma and just 4 miles inland from lovely Dillon Beach.

Tomales was originally home to the Coast Miwok Indians. European settlers started arriving in the early 20th century. Along with dairy ranches, early pioneers began growing grains and potatoes, and shipped local butter and hogs to the growing population of 4gers in the San Francisco area. In the 1870's the North Pacific Coast Railroad connected Sausalito to Tamales Bay and the redwoods of the Russian River area. This helped to transport lumber to booming San Francisco, made the transport of agricultural goods easier, and also brought tourists to the area.

Tomales is now home to 210 residents as well as a variety of local businesses including farms and ranches. The climate is mild with lows in the 30's in winter and highs reaching occasionally into the low 90's on the hottest days of summer.
The town includes The William Tell House Restaurant and Bar, Diekman's General Store, The Tomales Deli & Cafe, The Continental Inn, and a post office. The Tomales Bakery is not to be missed, as Sunset Magazine has written, has "The best pastries in the area". The town is currently constructing a wonderful park for the children which will include a miniature replica of the first home in Tomales, on the actual site.
