The drive-through town of Valley Ford is located on the California Hwy 1 just 9 miles east of Bodega Bay. It is north of the Estero Americano, a popular spot for kayakers, and about 5 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean.
The Coast Miwok and Pomo Indians were the first to inhabit the area making the most of the local hunting, fishing, and gathering. Actual settlers didn't come until the early 1800s when Russian fur traders inhabited a large part of the coastal region. In 1850, California became a state and Valley Ford became part of Sonoma County.
Today, Valley Ford is a beautiful town surrounded by rolling green hills used mainly for cattle and dairy farming. The Historic Valley Ford Hotel which houses Rocker Oysterfeller's Restaurant will take you back to 1864 when it was originally built. Dinnuccis Italian Dinners, Route 1 Diner, Valley Ford Market, and a couple of antique stores make up the town proper.
